obviously everything Jay said makes total sense and that's what we should have in perspective, always. but it's true to say that Up and Ego were quite big hits in their eras, I know they sold very well compared to many other singles that were released at the same time of them - especially if compared to other singles by other girlbands.

Thankyou for that, Jay :) It was interesting to read, and everything made sense! I've heard "freak like me" on the radio a couple of times this week, which shows how much of a hit it was at the time - just thought i'd say ;DDD

So taking all into account from their offical figures they've sold:
508,000 albums and 1,786,000 singles
so 2,294,000 records total [Uk Sales] which is not bad, but not very Great either. I'd like to see them get up to the 3 million mark hopefully within the next yr.

You can't deny that in the current climate of poor single sales and illegal downloading they're a pretty impressive single sales act lol.

Maybe the albums could do with a bump up. But still, impressive sales.

They're not that impressive. They're good, but nothing outstanding.

I'd only label Ego's sales as impressive, considering the song was #9 with poor promotion and the project (Wordshaker) was cancelled right after its release.

The 'current climate of poor single sales and illegal downloading' is a very out of date comment! Single sales are the best they've been in many years, since about 1998/1999. Legal downloads have completely revolutionised the singles chart.

Some random chart facts that back my claims:

Spoiler: show
There have already been 14 singles in 2010 sell over 500,000 copies - and the year isn't over yet. The last time there were that many singles selling over half a million copies was in 1999. From 2003 to 2008, only 2 or 3 singles had sales of over 500,000.

These are the sales that were needed to make the Top 100 best sellers of each year:

1998 - 187,000.
1999 - 181,000.
2009 - 171,000.
1996 - 150,000.
2000 - 150,000.
1997 - 140,000.
2001 - 125,000.
1995 - 119,000.
2008 - 104,000.
2002 - 102,000.
2007 - 78,000.
2006 - 74,500.
2003 - 65,000.
2004 - 59,000.
2005 - 57,000.

The Saturdays - Missing You is the 90th best selling single of 2010 so far, and has sold 183,000 copies. It's likely that this single won't be in the end of year Top 100 of 2010.

The Saturdays - Higher sold over 32,000 at #10 this week. In 2006, one single (Orson - No Tomorrow) managed to reach #1 on sales of just 18,000. Sales of 32,000 would be considered 'quite good' for a #1 in 2006/2007. Acts like McFly & Sugababes could reach #1 with 30,000+.

The Saturdays' single sales are good in comparison to Sugababes/Girls Aloud because The Saturdays are achieving the kind of sales that hits could sell in the late 1990s. As you can see, the best years of Girls Aloud are all at the bottom of the list above.

Headlines - 146,240
Higher - 240,146

:D

Also, Ego is on 312,000 apparently.

Not quite sure about Missing You, dunno if it's reached 200,000 yet.

Such a shame that aren't bringing out a third singles just to nudge the sales of Headlines a little bit more

Little update of the rank with Jay's new figures (although I guess the rest of the singles have increased their sales too, specially Up and Missing You):

338,000 - Chasing Lights (#9)
168,500 - Headlines (#3)
81,000 - Wordshaker (#9)

312,000 - Ego (#9)
311,000 - Up (#5)
273,000 - Higher (#10)
254,000 - Just Can't Get Enough (#2)
245,000 - Issues (#4)
190,000 - Missing You (#3)
160,000 - Forever Is Over (#2)
107,000 - If This Is Love (#8)
101,000 - Work (#22)

With a 3rd single, I'm sure Headlines would at least double the Wordshaker sales. Maybe once the tour starts the album will be back on the charts. It will be great if it reaches the 200k mark although it seems a bit unlikely.

At the moment it'll still be Up, because it's bound to have sold a little more since that estimate, but ultimately Ego will become the best selling!

Oh well either way it's great, both are very good Pop Songs, but I do prefer "Ego" to "Up".
