Streaming is sales, but you know that and are being facetious.

Rihanna is incredibly popular and has been selling huge amounts for over a decade now. You can count on one hand the amount of artists that manage that. Her sales and impact put her up with the likes of Madonna, Mariah etc. Whether the likes of those artist are to your taste (or mine) is by the by they obviously were/are doing something right.

I wasn't talking about Rihanna - I was talking about streaming.

Well you could have fooled me you weren't talking about Rihanna, when you are in her thread and posted this below.

Which is the old 'my fave doesn't sell as much as Rihanna so I must say sales don't equal quality'. Maybe your faves don't sell and lack quality :death:

I was literally talking streaming. The Chainsmokers have been #1 in the US for how long now but the song is shit. Drake was #1 for fuck knows how long here due to streaming. To me, streaming shouldn't be part of the charts as it isn't a pure sale. That was what I brought up and everyone on this board bar you recognises that.

Well they are catchy songs and the songs the people on mass are listening too, I don't get the problem?

What would you prefer, the days of Westlife or Saturdays where a rabid fanbase got them high up in the chart single after single as it was all aimed at maximising sales into one week and it not representing what the general public were listening too or liked.

Because if a singles chart doesn't reflect what is listened to on mass, it becomes who has the most rabid fanbase that will buy 2 or 3 copies of the same song and it not reflect the true popularity of the artist. The Saturdays were a huge example of this.

Yeah, cause Spotify doesn't count all the plays of a song by a "rabid fanbase" and it doesn't count either all the "automatic" plays when songs are included on playlists and such things... Oh, wait.

It almost is as if, back then, when you purchased a Now XX album, each song included on it gained one extra sale for its respective single on the charts. Nowadays you play a random playlist on Spotify (which is basically the 2016 equivalent of purchasing a compilation album a decade ago) and those individual plays do count towards a chart, even if you didn't actually chose to hear that certain song on purpose.

Nowadays, the charts are about popularity, which is good, and back then they were about sales. But back then you couldn't really measure popularity because if someone played the song 100 times a week, it would still count as just one sale/purchase. Both charts (old ones and new ones) have their ups and their lows.

1996 = Charts reflected the real tastes of customers who bothered wasting their money on music, but they didn't reflect the real popularity and longevity of a song.
2016 = Charts reflect the popularity and longevity of a song, but they don't reflect the real tastes of music customers.

You can only count contribute 0.7 of a sale to a song in the UK and that is if you listen to a song 10 times a day for all 7 days of a tracking week. So lets say the average song is 4 minutes long, you would have to spend 280 minutes (4 hours 40 minutes) listening to the song and specifically certain times each day to contribute 0.7 of a sale. Also if you skip a song in the first 30 seconds it doesn't count either, so if a song is on a playlist you don't like and skip it it doesn't count.

So when songs get huge streaming sales these days it is genuinely because people on mass are listening to them.

Every single fanbase has fans that will buy two or 3 copies of a single / album Spice Girls and solo Spice Girls were most certainly one. That is why everyone used to release 2 or 3 copies of singles with different bsides or remixes or videos etc to cater to those fans. Every single one of those singles had to interest people both in and outside the fanbase to have their first week impact, whether that lasted long or not...

As for the Saturdays, they had 9 singles that went silver in sales... that's not a bad feat at all give them some credit where it is due. (ps this is coming from someone who is not a fan of them either...)

'Love on the Brain' has become Rihanna's 30th Top 10 hit in the Billboard Hot 100! :D It has risen to #8. As far as I can gather, its success is largely down to radio airplay on this occasion.

She's third for most Top 10s, behind The Beatles (34) & Madonna (38). She now has more than Michael Jackson (as a solo artist), who achieved 29 Top 10 hits.

Makes me wonder how many she'll go on to achieve - this many hits and she only celebrated her 29th birthday two days ago!

I have no doubt she will become the most successful artist ever, she has done amazingly well streaming wise as music moves to that media.

Love on the brain was the song US pop radio have been waiting for from her, Work and Needed me weren't made for pop radio and This is what you came for tide them over but a big old Rihanna pop ballad was what they have been gagging for since Diamonds and Stay.

Her success continues to baffle me. She's good but she's not 'that' good. Must be her rabid fanbase streaming everything multiple times.

I'm surprised Love on the Brain is doing so well. One of the few tracks I deleted. Same goes for Needed Me, I never expected it to be a hit. I like it, but not to that extent.

Love On The Brain is probably the best song on ANTI, so I am glad it's doing well. On the other hand, I like Needed Me, but would have never expected it to be a hit!
