You guys know that lots of places, specially in South America and Africa it takes a tiny couple of sales to get to #1, right?

Yes of course. It's just nice to see their music in the charts and on iTunes

Would have been great to have some chart information from back in the 90s in countries in Africa and Asia in terms of chart positions.

I didn't want to sound rude, if that was how it came across.
I think there's no particular reason for those #1 where iTunes aren't huge as in the big markets, it's just a handful of people decided to download. Or maybe saw a video on the TV, listened on the radio and so on.

No I know you weren't being rude.

Would be amazing to have their chart potions in countries like Mongolia, India, China etc...

It was also Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and NZ that always seems to be available.

A lot of countries didn't have official charts bacause they don't have a strong music market.

Today, the Spotify "Throwback Thursday" playlist has Geri in her Union Jack dress as its playlist artwork, and Who Do You Think You Are is the first song. :D

88th most streamed song in the UK yesterday with 57,215 streams! Also #114 in Ireland with 4,213 streams.

Thursdays streams are meaningless though aren't they? From what I have read the OCC can never get Thursdays streams in time for the charts so just estimate them from the previous days trends.

So WDYTYA will have missed out on like 300 sales.

Sadly yes, it is meaningless in terms of the UK charts, but it's nice to see them in the Spotify chart anyway + to see a nice boost to its number of streams!

I find the UK charts very imprecise these days in a few respects. :( Streaming contributes to running totals with a 100/1 ratio, but it is now 150/1 for the weekly charts... :dizzy: Although the Official Charts Company disregards streaming altogether when sharing sales totals anyway. :death:

Tbh they weren't a precise science in the Spice Girls' heyday anyway, given that physical sales were worked out based on a sample of stores. Tbh the only time the UK charts were truly accurate is when digital downloads made up the majority of the chart in the early 2010s.

In summary = #mess

Streaming has ruined the charts and rendered them almost useless.

People said the same when digital downloads were included.

At the end of the day, charts are supposed to represent what people actually consume. How things are consumed change. Some people desperately want to go back to when physicals was King though...

I agree with you.
I was born in the 80s so for sure I like most the 90s when evrything had a CD and charts were matching my taste but nowdays is different and I don't understand what's so difficult to manage.
I mean....Mel C will have the same bad chart position even if it was alla physical bcs peopel don't get any interest in her musica doesn't matter how to make a chart. Sad but true.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I prefer the physical disc, but at the same time it's just not how people get their music nowadays. I don't fully "get" streaming, but most of my friends use Spotify (I have an account, but don't really use it) and that's how they consume music. One good thing about having a cd-, cassette- and LP-player is that friends tend to dump their "trash" at mine. Hey one man's trash...

It wouldn't be a fair chart (and not very realistic) if you excluded streaming these days. Like has been pointed out - physicals weren't an exact science in the 90s either. Download and streaming are at least very closely calculated even if Thursday streaming numbers are iffy.

No idea.

Maybe International Women's Day. Few articles and tweets here and there referencing the SG.

Currently at #195

Today's Throwback Thursday playlist theme on Spotify is "celebrating great songs by great women", and 'Who Do You Think You Are' is the second song in the ordering. :D

Oh and yesterday the 'This Is: Spice Girls" playlist was promoted on the front page of Spotify as part of International Womens Day.

I have Spotify but never log in.

Would love to see some screengrabs but I missed seeing that yesterday.

I didn't screengrab it unfortunately, but my friend took a photo of his screen (that's how I found out about it) :D

(I actually did screenshot the Throwback Thursday Brits playlist when Geri was the artwork for it a couple of weeks ago, but I can't find it now... :( )
