20 Years: MAMA ☆ Discussion Thread (4th Single from 'Spice')

Aww, it's time for the 'Mama' thread! :adam: This was one half of a Double A Side release with 'Who Do You Think You Are'. 'Mama' is an ode to the Spice Mums, but despite the sweet sentiment, this song seems to leave a lot of DenDeners cold. Let's see if the poll results reflect that or not.

Discussion points: the video, the artwork, the lyrics, performances, its success, whether you agreed with this being a single choice etc. Discuss anything to do with 'Mama'!

========================================

What I wrote about 'Mama' in the Spice Rate from 2014:

Gosh! One of the Spice Girls' singles crashes out in 60th place, which is a lot lower than its #44 position in the 2012 rate. It definitely wasn't helped by those 4 -1 scores, although the song does have some fans here - 15 out of 50 people gave the song either an 8/9/10 or 11 score.

This song is obviously an ode to the girls' mothers, and the single's release coincided with Mother's Day in the UK. It was released as a Double A Side single alongside 'Who Do You Think You Are', and entered straight into the chart at #1 on sales of nearly 250,000 copies. It spent 3 weeks there, and went on to sell over 600,000 copies, making it the 15th best selling single of 1997. This success was particularly impressive given that both songs were taken from 'Spice', which itself had already sold an incredible 2 million copies by the time the single was released.

This is the first poll I've gone for "like" rather than "love". A very strong liking though, it's a lovely sentiment. Image

This song is best when they do it live, it feels more powerful and bigger in a live setting. The xmas in spice world version is my fave with the choir.

It was my least fave single of theirs but I have grown to like it more and more and it has defo overtaken Too Much in my personal singles rank.

I prefer the radio version than the album song. It's too long so I voted to "I don't mind it"

I like the radio edit. The album version is way too long. But don't really care for the song that much. I am pretty sure, If it was released on its own without WDYTYA, it wouldn't have been a number 1.

You do realise it was released for mothers day? I think it would of still sold enough to be #1 on its own because of the time of release and the hugeness of the spice girls.

Mama would have been a b-side if I would have been in charge of the track listing for Spice. I would have replaced Mama with Take Me Home or Step To Me. Mama is a good song, but it never should have been a single.

To me it should have been a 12 track album. Take me home and then a re-release with Step to me on it and a few remixes, milk the fans and make it sell a few hundred thousand more copies.

I don't know where I fall in this poll. Because I liked it (back in the day), but since my mother passed, I can't hear it without feeling close to tears. So I don't know.

Hopefully in the future you can get to a point where you can listen to it and remember the good times.

Oops, no, I thought it was a Comic Relief single.

I love how they were cool enough to release a song about their moms.
And I love that this is not a song that tries to sound cool. It just is what is it: naive, honest, simple and lighthearted.

I wish they had performed an acoustic version of it, it sounds really promising in the Jimmy Lo's version.

I only liked it back in the day, but overtime it's become one of my favorite Spice Girls songs. Especially the radio edit. Love it, definitely in my Top 10.

This performance of it was my favorite, I used to watch it all the time. Love how all 5 of them look & the use of the head microphones.
The song is really great when they perform it live, as Jamie said the intro on the CISW Tour is incredible. Very beautiful.

I do tend skip Wannabe and Mama when I'm listening to Spice, simply because I've heard Wannabe a million times and I have to be in the mood for it, plus Mama is the longest track, but when I listen to it, it's still a great track. Very nostalgic. I voted 'I like it'.
