Finally finished my Spice Girls Funko Pops!

Postby chocolate_and_controversy » 13 Mar 2017, 00:58

I have a friend who's a popular Funko customizer and does a ton of commissions. I've always wondered why they didn't make Spice pops, so I've been dipping a toe in the customizer waters a little recently, and here they are! :D It's an expensive hobby that takes up a lot of space, so I don't do it much - this is only the second time I've tried it. They're far from perfect - lots of flaws - but I'm pretty happy with the way they came out!

The outfits are from the Spiceworld film cover shoot, obviously (at least I hope it's obvious). I did end up changing Mel B's shoes, because the gold and red shoes with the gold trousers just didn't look right. Please pardon the bad lighting!

I have more pics of the process and the pops I used to make them if anyone's interested!

Do you buy different characters then turn them into Spices?

OMG they're amazing. :inlove:

I'm a big funko pop collector. It is my ultimate wish for them to make Spice Girls ones or maybe find someone to customize a set for me.

Awesome work.

I have to say I'm not surprised they haven't made the official ones. Those girls seem to ban every single license of others to publish their stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if the company actually asked for the license and they didn't accept.

How ironic, huh? The Girls were LITERALLY everywhere; on everything world-wide and releasing album after album for 4 years and became a huge phenomena then boom, not a fucking thing basically ever again. Sucks being a Spice Girls fan. Hahaha

They are very good. I wished there would be some. This could have been a nice thing for the 20th anniversary. No need to sign, promote or anything. I always wondered why funko didn't made them, but I think J. Avi is on to something, they probably refused to lisence them.

Congrats to your friend and thank you for sharing with us! Really good job :)

Such a shame the official one doesn't exist, it could be really amazing.

Thank you, everyone! And since I think the way I wrote the original post was confusing, I should clarify - my friend is teaching me, but I made these. It's my second (and largest) set. I'm still new and therefore not very good, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

jezebelvictoria wrote:Where's Mel's eyebrows and eyelashes? She looks strange compared.

I didn't even notice that until JUST after I posted the pictures! Emma's eyelashes need to be added too. But I wouldn't have painted them on anyway - I'm going to add them on with a Sharpie so I can be more precise. I don't trust myself to get them right and make them symmetrical with a paintbrush.

And to the people who are asking, I'd definitely consider selling these - they're just sitting in boxes in a bag right now because my tiny New York apartment definitely doesn't have display space, so I'd rather have them go somewhere where they'll get to be seen. I'm just worried that the end consumer might be disappointed in the flaws - I mean, they look exactly the way they do in the pictures, but it's different seeing it in person. The paint is a little uneven in places, the cutting's not perfect, etc. To counteract that, I'd do it at a heavily reduced price, something like $100 for the set of all five. (To put it in perspective, that's the cost of just what the dolls alone cost me, not even including things like the sculpting clay, paint, paintbrushes, or time.) Hopefully that doesn't seem like too much because I don't think I could go much lower.
